According to IBGE data, the U.S. GDP of Rio Grande grew 4.8% in 2006, a rate similar to the rate recorded in the entire Northeast region and higher than the national average, which was 4%. The estimated GDP in 2006 reached U.S. $ 20.5 billion, R $ 2.7 billion more than that achieved in 2005. In 2006 the Rio Grande do Norte had the 18th largest GDP among the states and in the series 2002-2006. Farming, an increase of 20.7%, grew by 0.8%. According to researchers at the institute, the main highlight was irrigated horticulture, in which the melon, the main product in the basket, grew by 53%.
The services sector grew 5.8%. For IBGE, except the administration, public health and education, trade is the main activity of the service segment, accounting for 12.7% of all value added to its GDP.
The industry was the only segment of the economy which recorded potiguar retraction in 2006. The sector had turnover rate of -1.9%, and the processing industry contributed a volume of -3.2%, the mining at -11.5% and the extraction of oil and natural gas to -11, 1%. On the other hand were the activities of construction, with 11.1% growth in industrial services and utilities, with 10.6%.
Integrated Development Polo Assu Mossoró
It includes the municipalities of Afonso Bezerra, Alto do Rodrigues, Assu, Baraúna, Carnaubais, Ipanguaçu, Itajá, Natal, Pendencias, Serra do Mel and Upanema, with the most dynamic urban cities of Rio Grande do Norte and Assu. Located in the extreme west of Rio Grande do Norte and is characterized by the production of fruit and vegetable crops irrigated. As the largest producer of melons and watermelons, the Polo has great development of productive chains and trade of vegetables.
In addition to the agribusiness linked to the chain crops, the Polo also has other activities such as specialized consulting, project offices and technical assistance, rural tourism, engineering workshops, courses specialized in rural and agribusiness and agricultural marketing and agribusiness logistics.
It has a large hydro potential represented by the offer of 2.4 billion cubic meters of water accumulated in the dam Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves, in Rio Piranhas. There are public irrigation projects implemented and deployment and extensive private irrigated areas and is linked to many capitals of the Northeast of paved roads and rail access to ports and airports.

Tourism Cluster - Costa das Dunas
The Coast Pole Dunes includes 16 municipalities, benefiting more than 1.1 million people, which correspond to the resident population. It covers the entire eastern seaboard and parts of northern coast, extending about 200 miles, skirting the ocean Atlântico. O tourist flow is concentrated mainly in the coastal strip south of the capital, with the notable presence of beaches, dunes, ponds, large reserves of the Atlantic Forest (Baía Formosa, Natal and Tibau do Sul) and cliffs. In the northern coastline, abundant coral reefs, composed of algal crusts and skeletons of animals that live in colonies, large dunes and furniture, beautiful lakes and lush beaches. This pole also concentrates a large number of cultural attractions that tell a little of the rich history of Rio Grande do Norte.
As investment opportunities, include: hotels, restaurants, bars and similar venues for shows, sports, camping, eco-tourism and other services, particularly related to production and marketing of handicrafts.
Infrastructure
The State has a road network inside, with a length of 27,428 kilometers. Federal highways across the state in the north-south and east-west, especially the BR-101 that extends to the south of the country's rail network, managed by the Northeastern Railway Company, connecting the state to the whole country linking to other railroads. It has direct link with the Port of Natal. Rio Grande do Norte has two airports, one international in the city of Parnamirim, in the region of Natal, and other home located in Rio Grande do Norte. The Augusto Severo International Airport has the capacity to receive large aircraft, enabling the tourist flow and loads. The state has three ports, all managed by the Dock Company of Rio Grande do Norte, located in the municipalities ofNatal, Areia Branca and Guamaré.
